Vera

The town of Vera is a couple of miles inland from Vera Playa. The tale goes that Queen Isabel climbed to top of this hill, fired an arrow and ordered that Vera be built where it landed. Vera as we know it was built in the 16th Century in the urban Renaissance style and later enlarged in 18th Century.
It has interesting architecture, an impressive bullring built in 1879 in the Mudejar style and restored in 1993. On the 25th September, patron saint Cleofas’ day,it is the setting for bullfights. Even if you disaprove of Bull-Fighting, the Plaza de Toros museum is definitely worth a visit during the daytime, you get a personal guided tour and will be amazed at the culture and ceremony that goes into this ancient event, winning Bulls are honoured here. The main square is beautiful and a wonderful place to sit and watch the world go by with a wine or coffee.
It is a prosperous town with a great variety of shops, many selling locally made handicrafts, and on Saturdays there is an amazing street market that seems to take over the town selling everything from superb fruit and vegetables to bedding and kitchenware, it is well worth a visit.
An equally strong attraction is the local cuisine, found both in classy restaurants and tapas bars, there are many restaurants and bars to be found in Vera and the bus service from the playa is excellent and very reasonably priced.
